Lab-Tested CBD: What to Look for and Why It Matters

The hemp edibles market has exploded in recent years — and with that growth has come a flood of products that range from excellent to outright misleading. One of the most important ways to protect yourself as a consumer is to only buy from brands that provide third-party lab testing. Here's what that means, what to look for, and why it should be non-negotiable.

What Is a Certificate of Analysis (COA)?

A Certificate of Analysis, or COA, is a document issued by an independent, accredited laboratory that verifies the contents of a hemp or CBD product. It's the gold standard for transparency in the industry.

A legitimate COA will confirm:

  • Cannabinoid content — exactly how much CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids are in the product
  • THC compliance — verification that Delta-9 THC is at or below the 0.3% federal legal threshold
  • Batch number — so you can match the lab results to the specific product you purchased

Why Third-Party Testing Matters

The key word is third-party. Any brand can claim their product is high quality — but a COA from an independent lab that has no financial relationship with the brand is objective proof. Without it, you're taking the brand's word for what's in the product.

Studies have found that a significant percentage of CBD products on the market contain either more or less cannabinoids than advertised. Third-party testing is the only way to know for sure.

How to Read a COA

When you look at a COA, here's what to check:

  • Lab name and accreditation — the lab should be ISO-accredited or state-licensed
  • Test date — results should be recent, ideally within the last 12 months
  • Cannabinoid panel — look for CBD and THC mg/g or percentage values that match the product label
  • Delta-9 THC level — should be ≤0.3% by dry weight for Farm Bill compliance
  • Batch or lot number — match this to the number printed on your product packaging

Red Flags to Watch Out For

Be cautious of brands that:

  • Don't provide a COA at all, or make it hard to find
  • Only show in-house testing rather than independent lab results
  • Can't match lab results to a specific batch number
  • Show THC levels that don't match what's on the label

How Astra Infusions Handles Lab Testing

At Astra Infusions, transparency isn't an afterthought — it's built into every product we make. Every batch of our Cosmic Gummies and Cosmic Chocolate Bars is independently tested by a third-party laboratory for cannabinoid content and THC compliance, and the results are publicly available on our COA page.

We use our production dates as batch codes, making it simple and intuitive to find your results. Just check the production date printed on your package, match it to the corresponding entry on our COA page, and you'll have full visibility into exactly what was tested and when.

You'll see exactly how much CBD and THC is in your product and confirmation of Farm Bill compliance. That's the Astra Infusions standard — and we think every hemp brand should be held to it.
